Kerry Picks Edwards

Last week in an embarrassing front-page exclusive, The New York Post reported that John Kerry had selected Richard Gephardt to be his Democratic running mate. NewsScope readers were likewise treated to the erroneous exclusive that Kerry had picked Hillary Clinton. Both stories* appeared only hours before Kerry announced his choice of Senator John Edwards for the Vice President spot.

John Edwards horoscope (June 10, 1953; 7:02 am; Seneca, South Carolina) features four planets in Gemini, including a buoyant Moon-Jupiter conjunction. The inherent enthusiasm and high spirits of this combination add a spark to the more Saturnian heaviness found in John Kerry's horoscope (who has his Sun and Moon aligned with Saturn). All these Gemini planets eloquently reflect Edwards' primary message of "two Americas".

While this writer missed the correct nominee, he did get the timing right, which was in synch with the conjunction of the Sun and Saturn. This Sun-Saturn pairing fell right on Edwards' first house Uranus, showing how his independent style was fully vetted by the Kerry campaign, and found to be just what they were seeking. Kerry's chart also features four planets in Gemini huddled around the seventh house of partners, so Edwards fulfills this partnership signature.

Kerry's Pluto at eight degrees Leo forms an exact square to the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, giving him the potential to transform the nation's direction. Edwards' Sun is now progressed to eight degrees Leo as well, another key link in their partnership. On the day Kerry and Edwards first appeared together, transiting Mars was at eight degrees Leo, fully energizing this new team.

Kenneth Lay Pleads "Not Guilty"

Last Thursday former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay pleaded not guilty to an 11-count indictment accusing him of lying to his employees, the public, and defrauding investors. Legal experts cite this case as the centerpiece of the government's crackdown on corporate America. Enron,** once the seventh largest corporation in the country, filed for bankruptcy on December 2, 2001.

Kenneth Lay was born with his Sun, Moon, and Mercury in the pioneering sign of Aries (April 15, 1942; 6:00 pm; Tyrone, MO). Mars, the ruler of his Aries planets, is found in the ninth house of higher education. As an economics professor, Lay developed his ideas about the energy markets, from which Enron was born and rose swiftly into the top echelons of corporate power.

Lay's Mars squares Neptune, the planet that governs oil and gas. By being in the twelfth house of secrets, Neptune is also associated with what goes on behind closed doors. Lay claims that his management team perpetrated the fraudulent acts without his knowledge, while the government case relies on Enron's CFO Andrew Fastow who met with Lay behind those closed doors.

Fastow (December 22, 1961; Washington DC; time unknown) was born with Mars in Sagittarius, a placement that opposes Lay's Mars in Gemini. When comparing two male horoscopes, Mars opposite Mars can be extremely competitive, and the two corporate warriors can become openly hostile to each other. By the end of 2004 transiting Pluto will be entering this Mars zone, leading to an intense courtroom battle.

Tobey Maguire, The Conflicted Superhero

Propelled by favorable reviews and word of mouth, Spider-Man 2 broke opening-day box office records last week with a stunning take of $40,5 million, beating the old record of $39 million set by the original Spider-Man. Tobey Maquire as the web-slinging spidey suffers from a unique dilemma: how can a superhero ever have a soulmate when that woman will always be threatened by enemies?

As a Cancer with his Sun square Pluto, Tobey Maguire (June 27, 1975; 8:20 am; Santa Monica, CA) is ideally cast to personify Spider-Man's emotional complexity. Cancer natives are naturally attuned to their feelings and emotions, which when modified by intense Pluto, can be come dark and brooding. The Sun-Pluto link describes the passionate soul, and the one driven to understand the nature of personal power.

With seven degrees Leo Rising, Tobey Maguire has the identical Ascendant as George W. Bush, a potent national point since it's conjunct the U.S. North Node and squares the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. Leo represents the path of the hero, and this Leo Ascendant represents a mission-oriented personality, one who feels compelled to play the hero in a battle of good versus evil.

Maguire, like Bush, has his Sun and Saturn in Cancer, and in both cases these planets are located in the twelfth house of secrets. These two media favorites were born one Saturn cycle (29 years) apart from each other, and now that transiting Saturn is in Cancer, both are experiencing the maturing process of a Saturn Return. The astrology-minded film critic could say that Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man is just the fantasy version of what George Bush aspires to be.

* The editor for the New York Post issued a statement about the faux pas, saying "We unreservedly apologize to our readers for the mistake", a sentiment to which this reporter can heartily sympathize. As an additional note, I would explain the error on laziness. While Hillary's horoscope showed she was in the running, so did John Edwards, and I didn't even look at his chart until after the decision was announced.
