Remembering Ronald Reagan

The long expected, but sudden death of Ronald Reagan set the nation into a nostalgic mood, with documentaries, memorable one-liners, and descriptions of his distinct personality filling the airwaves. Astrologers too are re-examining his horoscope, although there's no general agreement on his exact birth time. AstroDataBank gives 4:16 am, but this time has been widely discredited.

Reagan's astrologer Joan Quigley must have had the right time, and from the clues in her book "What Does Joan Say?", Reagan's birth time can be back-engineered to 3:45 am (see page 157, for example). This gives him 20 degrees Sagittarius Rising, which is where transiting Pluto is now. This degree zone is also very close to the Venus occultation described in NewsScope April 19, and fits the "spectacular event" attributed to this astro-event.

Reagan's horoscope fits like a glove with the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope, accounting for the immense impact he had on American politics and culture. His Sun at 16 degrees Aquarius is perfectly conjunct the fourth house cusp, the foundation of the chart. His Uranus, the planet of revolution, is conjunct the U.S. Pluto, allowing him to usher in his conservative revolution.

Among the most fascinating details of Reagan's chart is that when he was first elected President on November 4, 1980, his Mars had progressed to 25 degrees Aquarius (25AQ23). This degree is exactly the position of the U.S. Moon (25AQ28), and reflects his popularity among the people. Having personal connections to the U.S. Moon is the best ticket to winning the Presidency, something George W. Bush has, and John Kerry is missing.

The Astrology of D-Day

Called the greatest day of the twentieth century, D-Day was "one of those rare hinges of history that might have bent the other way," as Time magazine described it. Over the weekend President Bush and European leaders gathered on the beaches of Normandy to honor the occasion when 200,000 Allied troops launched the largest seaborne invasion in history. Astrologically, what might explain June 6, 1944 as such an historical turning point?

The first clue is that on this day a Venus-Uranus conjunction was taking place exactly conjunct the U.S. Uranus. As described last week, the U.S. Uranus itself is aligned with the Mars-like, first magnitude star Antares. Major activations of this point lead to major wars. The 84 year cycle of Uranus previously coincided with the Civil War and the Revolutionary War, and the next one takes place in 2027.

Then, the phrase "one of those rare hinges of history" evokes the Lunar Nodes, which astrologers associate with fateful encounters, destiny, and evolutionary developments. On D-Day Pluto was at six degrees Leo, which in the U.S. horoscope is the location of the North Node, the point that leads to one's higher path. Simultaneously Mars was conjunct Pluto, and precisely squaring the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant to activate the underlying dynamics.

The connection between Pluto and the Lunar Nodes was repeated* in several ways in the U.S. horoscope, emphasizing this date as the critical turning point. The invasion was completed less than a year later when transiting Pluto formed a square to the Scorpio Ascendant, and transformed the U.S. into a global superpower.

CIA Chief Resigns

On December 21, 2002 when CIA Director George Tenet told President Bush that the case against Saddam Hussein's Weapons of Mass Destruction was a "slam dunk", Bush began the irrevocable march to war against Iraq. Tenet resigned last Thursday, saying he wanted to spend more time with his wife and teenage son, a claim that many observers ridiculed.

George Tenet was born with his Sun in the administrative sign of Capricorn (January 5, 1953; Flushing, NY; time unknown), a position enhanced by trines to a duty-conscious Moon in Virgo, and a steady Jupiter in Taurus. This Grand Trine in earth signs allowed Tenet to remain as head of the CIA for seven years, a tenure only exceeded by Allen Dulles, who masterminded the Cold War espionage games of the 1950s.

Tenet's Sun is opposite Uranus, which gives him an independent streak, and a tendency to sudden or radical impulses which break from his Capricornian responsibilities. Over the past year as transiting Saturn in Cancer was approaching his Sun-Uranus polarity, it's become increasingly obvious that Saddam had no WMD. Saturn's looming influence often brings a great deal of anxiety, and undoubtedly, Tenet could feel the heat.

Saturn will be conjunct Tenet's Uranus in July, by which time several critical reports will appear casting blame on his maverick intelligence assessments. Getting out early was probably a smart idea. However, the astrologer can't discount the urgent call from his wife either, since transiting Uranus is exactly conjunct Tenet's Juno, which in a man's horoscope often represents his wife. The celestial combination of transiting Saturn and Uranus indicated it was time to resign.

Julia Roberts Expecting Twins

This week's issue of People magazine features a story on a Celebrity Baby Boom, and gives the lowdown on the new arrivals for Helen Hunt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Blanchett, and other well-known stars. The story announcing the trend came out as Ceres,** the asteroid governing pregnancy, is in the celebrity sign of Leo, and exactly conjunct the U.S. North Node.

Among the pregnant stars is Julia Roberts (October 28, 1967; 12:16 am; Smyrna, GA), who is expecting twins. Julia's North Node is in the tenth house of career, so she naturally finds personal fulfillment through an energetic, independent career path. However, her natal Ceres is conjunct Uranus, and the two form a hard aspect to her North Node, reflecting how pregnancy would suddenly disrupt her career goals.

Julia's publicist reported that the $25 million/per film star would give birth early next year, a statement that appeared as transiting Ceres was exactly squaring Julia's Scorpio Sun. Roberts married photographer Danny Moder on July 4, 2002 when her progressed Ceres was exactly conjunct Juno, the marriage asteroid. In the symbolic language of astrology, the alliance of Juno and Ceres means getting married to have children.

Saturn by transit gives further details of her transition into motherhood. For the past year Saturn has been traveling through the reclusive twelfth house in the nesting sign of Cancer. Although she made the film Mona Lisa's Smile, she admits now she couldn't wait to get done filming so she could go home. Saturn arrives on her Cancer Ascendant this November, by which time her new parenting responsibilities will fully emerge.

* The secondary progressed North Node was at 27 degrees Cancer (27CN35), precisely opposite the U.S. Pluto (27CP33), the ruler of the Scorpio Rising U.S. horoscope. Even more astonishing: by tertiary progression Pluto was at 6AQ35, exactly opposite the U.S. North Node at 6LE35. This is a veritable triple whammy involving Pluto and the Lunar Nodes.
