Sept hosts 20 dynamic celestial events: Six ingresses, five conjunctions, three squares, two oppositions, one station, one ending shadow point, a new and a full Moon.

Intensity and reciprocal energies prevail all month. Concentration of purpose is available to those who have decisions to make. Gathering information from our collective experiences can be fulfilling, and can make distinctive and dramatic differences in our awarenesses and our decisions. September 10-14 is an excellent time to assess or evaluate ideals, goals, sense of self, and family issues - be open to new and unique concepts. At mid-month, a freeing-up of communication is possible, and thereafter, people may feel more comfortable sharing their true opinions about values, responsibilities, and what they want out of life. Abrupt shifts in energy are the rule rather than the exception, which supports spontaneity. "Strength Through Resilience" are Virgo's power words.

9/2 Mercury turns direct 6:10 AM, 25:44 Leo. Develop a sense of humor. Use possible delays to reflect on your past experiences. Make sure that your values embody principles that are useful and practical.

9/6 Venus enters Leo 3:16 PM. A love of loving... the feeling associated with being in love is delightful, and we can experience that feeling by creating an environment of support. Dress for success, and be prepared for enjoyable circumstances. Plan get-togethers with others of similar interests. Examples: older ladies can form a "red hat" club; younger men can create groups for "tail-gate" parties at ball games.

9/9 Mars squares Pluto 9:01 PM, 19:34 Virgo/Sagittarius. Challenge yourself to develop self-confidence and assess your ambition for its practicality and appropriateness. Low energy levels provide a need for retreat and healing - plan ahead for greatest advantage.

9/10 Mercury enters Virgo 12:38 AM. Open yourself to a program of fitness and well being - one that develops the mind and the body. Martial arts disciplines and yoga offer such curriculums, or create your own. A good time to initiate habits that really integrate mind and body.

9/11 Sun squares Pluto, midpoint Nodes 5:23 PM, 19:35 Virgo/Sagittarius. Expect a challenge or striving for power or authority involving historic or impending disclosures. Some may experience a regeneration of health through the release of a restorative course of action, previously unknown or undeveloped.

9/13 Mercury opposes Uranus 8:53 AM, 4:09 Virgo/Pisces. Development of intuition or inventive thinking offers a perspective to the interaction of mind and spirit. Learn to delegate or categorize rather than being overly involved in details. Life is busy - learn to balance organization and spontaneity.

9/14 New Moon 22:06 Virgo. West coast 7:29 AM, east coast 10:29 AM. This is a good time to start projects that deal with design elements, health projects, or service occupations. West coast issues deal with confinement or guardianship; east coast topics concern large groups or long-standing goals.

9/15 Sun conjoins Mars 5:55 AM, 23:01 Virgo. This can be a beneficial time to strike out on a mission or use your talents to make a better life for yourself or someone less fortunate. Literacy or healthcare are possible issues in which to dedicate your time and expertise.

9/16 Mercury ESP (Ending Shadow Point) 9:45 AM, 8:46 Virgo. Take time to go over your communications of the past two months and recognize patterns that have repeated or intensified parts of your life. This is an excellent time to make sense out of previously vague or misunderstood incidents.

9/18 Venus opposes Neptune Rx 10:50 AM, 12:57 Leo/Aquarius. A new sensitivity or receptivity for beauty that shines from within replaces a strictly exterior image.

9/21 Sun conjoins Jupiter 4:47 PM, 29:19 Virgo. Details must support principles, as light is shed on volatile situations. Creative power expands as new organizing procedures become available. Develop the ability to discern and the will power to stay on the path to your goal.

9/22 Mercury squares Pluto, midpoint Nodes 4:02 PM, 19:41 Virgo/Sagittarius. Influence through communication, the art of persuasion is being developed. Power and authority will be openly challenged as the past is reevaluated and the future is envisaged.

9/22 Sun enters Libra 9:55 PM. The next week marks a shift in energy promoting the balancing of opposites. Fairness becomes an issue in all situations, and we must take care to be free to act when action is called for.

9/24 Jupiter enters Libra 8:23 PM. Discernment becomes a remarkably useful tool that allows you to decide where to commit your energies. Link your intellect with your practical sense.

9/26 Mars enters Libra 2:15 AM. Actions speak louder than words, however we must take care to act with compassion and conscious awareness, remembering that once the genii is out of the bottle it cannot be recaptured.

Mars conjoins Jupiter 5:17 PM, 00:24 Libra. Maintaining a sense of proportion will help you to keep a level head in any urgent situation. The urge to take action can be strong, however becoming aware of many facets of a situation can save you from embarrassment or keep you safe in an unstable situation.

9/28 full Moon 5:45 Aries/Libra. West coast 6:09 AM, east coast 9:09 AM. Impatience can prevent you from fulfilling a project full of many divers factors. Others may wish to influence your progress through their personal interests in your affairs. On the west coast, intense personal interaction with peers or partners may become a part of the equation. East coast issues deal more with groups of like-minded people and possible attractive investments. Be sure to thoroughly research before speculating, or committing your support.

Mercury enters Libra 7:13 AM. Balanced communication is called for - this is a powerful time to answer questions, fill in missing facts, and correct misunderstandings.

Mercury conjoins Jupiter 6:21 PM, 00:51 Libra. Work out a balance between the abstract and the tangible. To ensure success, make sure that the essential details match the basic principles of your project.

9/29 Mercury conjoins and contra-parallels Mars 12:21 PM, 02:13 Libra. A dichotomy of opinions may divide those interested in unity: The need to compete vs. the need to cooperate. Consensus may not be possible, but it is okay to agree to disagree until further discussions can be completed.

September Symbology 2004

September was originally named for the seventh month of the old Roman calendar. The astrological year is divided according to the travel of the Sun through the ecliptical signs of the zodiac, which are offset from the modern calendar months. During the first two-thirds of September, the Sun moves through the last two decanates of Virgo, one of the signs associated with Mercury.

September's principle gemstone is the sapphire, which means "beloved of Saturn". Sapphires come in all colors, (the red sapphire is called ruby) the favorite being blue. Some ancient peoples believed that the Earth rested upon a giant sapphire, which gave a blue color to the sky. Sapphires were used to strengthen the third eye. They were dipped in cool water and placed on the eyes to cure vision disorders. "A Sapphire on her brow should bind, ŒTwill cure diseases of the mind." The Pagan Book of Days-2001, Page 104.

September is sacred to the ancient Greek goddess Carpo, the Hora of Autumn (Thallo was the Hora of spring). The Horae, daughters of Zeus and Themis, were goddesses of time and order in nature. Carpo was venerated and invoked for the successful timing of the harvest, that the Earth be clothed in appropriate raiment.

In the Christian tradition, September first is the celebration of St. Giles, special patron of the disabled. Giles was wounded in the leg by an arrow when he protected a stag from being shot. Hospitals and Monasteries were dedicated to St. Giles.

One of September's special days is Labor Day, the first Monday of the month (9/6), a day set aside to honor the common worker. Common people are associated with the Moon, and Monday is the Moon's day. The Sun at that time is in the Saturn decanate of Virgo (Saturn's term is in Virgo), the sign of labor. Saturn, associated with responsibility, was grandfather to the Horae. On Labor Day, we pay tribute to average workers (associated with Virgo) and their steadfast work, of utmost importance in our world cultures. To promote sensitive communication, unions were originally formulated to unite the goals of the workers with those of the company owners for the betterment and advancement of both.

In the Hawaiian Zodiac, Mahoe Mua (goddess of volcanoes and creator of Diamond Head), and Mahoe Hope (the gourd scales, held by the Hawaiian God Hokeo), encompasses the month of September. People born in Mahoe Mua are an enigma. It is said that their first conscious act dictates how they will conduct their life. A mischievous act will create a life filled with mischief, and a beneficent act will create a life of goodness. In Roman mythology, Mercury's first act was one of mischief, thus setting the stage for its archetypal example.

Sept. 14 is the Egyptian Feast of Lights, honoring the gods who protect the tombs of the dead.

September 19 was a daylong fast to propitiate Thoth (the Logos), the Egyptian god of wisdom and magic, and their name for Mercury. The same god was known in Greece as Hermes. Hermes had a reputation as "The Trickster", which is still evident in modern times. An asteroid named Hermes was discovered on October 28, 1937 at Heidelberg Observatory, but it disappeared before it could be numbered. It was re-discovered recently and numbered (69230), however its past positions are tricky to calculate. In all its mythologies, the trickster is a shapeshifter who takes the form of the coyote, and several birds, such as the crow. The crow, a remarkably clever bird has a propensity for thievery, and has been known to outwit humans. They are the most sociable of all bird species, bonding not only with their own families, but with humans as well. Crows have been known to mimic human words, and are one of the loudest and most raucous of all birds. It is said that Cicero was forewarned of his death by the presence of a raven (cousin to the crow.) Odin, another form of Mercury carried a raven on each shoulder. During the First World War, ravens and crows followed the troops and feasted on the battlefield carnage, to the dismay of the surviving soldiers. When the angry soldiers shot at them, the birds deftly stayed out of range of their artillery. Groups of other birds are referred to as a flock of geese, a charm of finches, or convocation of eagles, but a group of crows are referred to as a "murder of crows." A crowbar is a tool that provides a lever arm enabling entry into a difficult place without a key. The term "eating crow" came from the humiliation and insult suffered by soldiers from watching casualties being devoured by the birds.

Sept. 8th is the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Not unknown to other religions, the Israelites called her the divine Sophia, manifesting in the scrolls of the law, called the bride of the faithful, about whom Alexander Susskind of Grodno (1780) observed "When a man sits in this dwelling, the shadow of faith, the Shekinah spreads out Her wings over him from above." Shekinah means "the Presence of God" the third (feminine) person of the Holy Trinity. Known as Fatima or Mary in Islamic tradition, the Divine Feminine is honored:

"Woman is a beam of the divine Light. She is not the being whom sensual desire takes as its object. She is Creator, it should be said, She is not a Creature." Jalaluddin Rumi, Mathnawi Book 1.

On September 11, may we pause and reflect. This is the anniversary of the vicious attack on America that tried to replace our consciousness of freedom with a mindset of fear. In remembering that day, join me in sending healing to those who lost loved ones, and also to all those afflicted with hate for their fellow humans. May we flood our Earth with the Light of the Creator, and consciously create a world filled with peace and caring.

The second Sunday of September (9/12) is National Neighborhood Day, a day to celebrate community and bring together people sharing common localities, promoting safety, cooperation, shared resources, and raising the quality of life, regardless of their individual differences.

In the Jewish tradition, Rosh Hashanah, also known as the Jewish New Year is commemorated on September 16. And Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement is celebrated on September 25. September 30 through October 5 marks Sukkoth, the festival of the Tabernacles, from the blessing of the Jews' journey of escape from Egypt, and the temporary shelters in the desert that God provided. These holy days are all known as moveable feasts. Their calendar dates change each year because they are based on a Lunar calendar, and are off-set from the season-centered Solar (Gregorian) calendar of the western world. In the Hebrew tradition the day begins at sunset on the previous day. Is this any less logical than beginning a day in the dark of night (at midnight)?

The Islamic calendar is also Lunar based, each month beginning on the visual citing of the New Crescent Moon. In 2004, the month of Sha'ban begins on September 15.

Although the traditional Native American name for the September pleniluna (full Moon) is the Harvest Moon, the Wiccan ritual refers to it as the Wine Moon, or the Barley Moon, in thanksgiving for all that the revered nature spirits have allowed during the growing season. Each full Moon symbolizes the mother, a time of feminine power, ripeness, maturity and wisdom. For men, it is their inner nurturer.

September provides a home to the autumnal equinox, this year on Sept. 22, once celebrated in all ancient religions by honoring the hunting and fishing deities. After adult animals had reproduced, entrapment of young animals was forbidden. In Celtic tradition it is the festival of Mabon (Welch for "son"), when, at the equator, sunrise is due east, and sunset is due west - and daytime and nighttime hours are equal. It is the festival that marks the point of transition between light and dark halves of the year, and the second harvest (that of fruits). The autumnal equinox is the second station of the year. It is sacred to the mother and daughter Greek goddesses Demeter and Persephone, who embody the growing and resting seasons; the Irish goddess Carman, patroness of poetry; and the Norse fruitfulness and prosperity god Frey, and Freya, goddess of love and beauty. It is the transition time between the mother and the crone, the second and third faces of the triple goddess. When we choose to journey into a new section of the yearly framework, it is best done from within, as perception paints our consciousness.

September 28 is the festival of Zisa a German autumn harvest goddess, who was invoked to bring peace and renewal to the Earth.

September 29 is the celebration of Michaelmas, in honor of Archangel Michael, the Warrior Angel of the First Ray.

September 30 is the festival of Medetrinalia. Medetrina was the Roman goddess of medicine.

"Astronomy is excellent; but it must come up into life to have its full value,
and not remain there in globes and spaces."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
