Cho Seung Hui, The Sexually Wounded Outsider
While police investigators were baffled, any astrologer looking
at Cho Seung Hui's horoscope (January 18, 1984; Seoul, South Korea;
time unknown*) would spot the militant Mars-Pluto conjunction in
the warrior sign of Scorpio right away. But many youths have this
combination and have somehow managed it without going crazy. What
else accounts for the massacre at Virginia Tech?
The asteroid Juno plays a critical role in the timing and underlying
psychology of this troubled student. Cho's Juno is found at 3º
Taurus, exactly opposite his Mars-Pluto. Juno's function in the
chart is to seek out committed partnerships, but in the process,
the desire for social equality and fairness is paramount. And when
afflicted by Mars and/or Pluto, Juno can become enraged by perceived
injustices. Then she becomes the avenging Storm Goddess.
By transit on April 16, Juno was at 18º Libra, where she activated
the U.S. progressed Mars* at 18º Libra. Because this Mars recently
turned retrograde, it's become extra potent, and any major transit
to this point can unleash an act of terrorism or extreme violence.
In addition to Juno, transiting Saturn was at 18º Leo, with transiting
Jupiter at 19º Sagittarius also a factor.
A Mars-Pluto aspect in a man's chart often reflects an intense,
almost overwhelming sex drive. Since Cho also has Saturn in Scorpio,
this drive was repressed, hidden away. Saturn quncunx (150º) the
North Node may also indicate sexual abuse from trusted elders.
In general, Saturn represents our ability to get along with the
consensus reality, but on April 16, transiting Chiron in socially-aware
Aquarius was exactly squaring his Saturn, reflecting his sense
of being sexually wounded, and being an outsider.
Royal and Sarkozy Face off For May 6 French Election
With a final plea to women voters, Segolene Royal offered a starkly
different personal style and vision during the closing weeks of
France's presidential election. While her conservative opponent,
frontrunner Nicolas Sarkozy (January 28, 1955), emphasized his
toughness on crime and the need for a strong authority, Ms. Royal
said that as president she will be nurturing and an unthreatening
mother-protector.
Segolene Royal was born with her Virgo Sun sextile Juno (September
22, 1953; 4:10 pm; Dakar, Senegal), the closest aspect her Sun
makes. Juno is found in the royal sign of Leo, where it's conjunct
the South Node. In evolutionary astrology, this placement might
indicate a former life as a queen, or a pattern of being recognized
for her aristocratic airs and roots.
Her North Node in Aquarius is strongly supported by her Aquarius
Ascendant, and points to what she needs to express and integrate
into her lifestyle. These Aquarius placements reflect her political
platform as a socialist, which aims for socio-economic equality
within the governing framework. Uranus, her ruling planet, is found
in Cancer, which underscores her role as a mother of four and family
values in general.
Germany's first woman chancellor, Angela Merkel (July 17, 1954;
5:45 pm; Hambourg), has a similar set-up with her Moon in Aquarius
and her Sun conjunct Uranus. However, unlike Merkel and Margaret
Thatcher (October 13, 1925; 9:00 am; Grantham, UK), who both have
strong Mars-Pluto aspects, Royal's Mars in Virgo is conjunct Ceres.
And so, rather than promoting her strength, she promotes her caretaking
capacity in her efforts to become France's first woman president.
Spider-Man 3: Tobey Maguire as the Bad Boy
Actors Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst** were in Tokyo last week
for the worldwide premiere of Spider-Man 3. By all accounts, the
latest installment of the blockbuster franchise should also become
a box-office favorite. As the Hollywood Reporter said, "The
wow factor works overtime with state-of-the-art special effects
that are as beautiful as they are astonishing."
In this high-tech, 139-minute film, Maguire (June 27, 1975; 8:20
am; Santa Monica, CA) gets to play out his dark side, which is
a natural for anyone with the Sun in Cancer square Pluto. Maguire's
Mars in Aries and its network of aspects underscore his portrayal
of Spidey: the conjunction with Chiron shows his frequent wounds,
opposite Uranus brings plenty of action, and the square to Saturn
challenges his strength and courage.
Kirsten Dunst (April 30, 1982; Point Pleasant, NY; time unknown)
adds the love interest, but with her Mars in Libra squaring Maguire's
moody Cancer Sun, their interaction is often characterized by emotional
conflict. However, her Leo Moon conjunct his Leo Ascendant makes
for melodramatic on-screen chemistry. Also, her Jupiter trine his
Sun gives them exceptional rapport, both on and off screen.
Spider-Man 3 debuts in North America on May 4, when transiting
Pluto is at 28º Sagittarius. From this position, Pluto is exactly
trine Maguire's Midheaven, his point of honor, where it's sure
to launch him into the next round of worldwide celebrity. At the
same time, transiting Pluto is quincunx (150º) Kirsten's Mercury,
which gives her the ability to persuade director Sam Raimi and
Tobey into doing Spider-Man 4. "I won't do it without the
other two," she said.
